FAQ's For Gallbladder Diseases

Gallbladder problems, especially gallstones, will cause intense pain in the upper right part of the abdomen, near the breastbone, and in the back between the shoulder blades. They may also cause chronic diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, jaundice, or fever.

It is said that the risk factors for developing gallstones can be summed up by the 5Fs: Female, Fertile, Fat, Fair, and Forty. However, this diagnosis is very limiting and is not encouraged to be used by doctors anymore.

An inflamed gallbaldder will cause intense pain in the upper right abdomen, as well as tenderness. The pain can later spread to the shoulder and back.

Though there are no umbrella causes for all gallbladder problems, a high-fat diet resulting in obesity, lack of exercise, and processed foods often contribute to the risk of developing complications.

Besides prescribed pain relievers, a hot compress on the tender area of the abdomen can help relieve pain and ease spasms.

The gallbladder is a small sac located under the liver, which stores bile produced in the liver and passes it on to the small intestine through a duct. Bile aids in the digestion of fats in the small intestine. Any inflammation, irritation, or damage caused to the gallbladder results in various gallbladder diseases. The four most common gallbladder diseases are:
• Gallstones (Cholelithiasis)— Gallstones, medically called cholelithiasis, are small, hard pieces of material formed in the gall bladder. Bile is a by-product containing waste materials like bilirubin and cholesterol, which contribute to the formation of gallstones. It can be caused by incomplete or infrequent emptying of the gallbladder.
• Cholecystitis—It is one of the most common gallbladder diseases and causes chronic or acute inflammation of the walls of the gallbladder. Such gallbladder inflammation causes severe pain in the abdomen.
• Cholestasis—It is primarily a liver disease in which bile flow is reduced or blocked.
• Gallbladder cancer—Though relatively rare, gallstones are often a major risk factor for gallbladder cancer.

Diseases of the gallbladder are cured or treated in several different ways. The following medications may be prescribed:
• Pain relievers like codeine or hydrocodone, especially for cholecystitis treatment
• Surgery, mostly in cases of repeat gallbladder inflammation treatment or to remove gallstones
• Chenodiol (Chenodol) and ursodiol (Actigall, Urso 250, Urso Forte) given to dissolve cholesterol gallstones
• IV fluids to prevent dehydration

Besides this, there are lifestyle changes that can help with gallbladder relief.
Manage BMI; being overweight increases the risk of experiencing gallbladder complications
Manage blood sugar levels; having diabetes also increases the risk
Exercise regularly

HerbsDaily offers a wide range of supplements effective in managing gallbladder diseases.
